GDF SUEZ Energy UK signs energy-from-waste deal

The UK subsidiary of energy firm GDF SUEZ has signed an agreement to buy electricity generated by an energy-from-waste facility.

The deal will allow the energy company to purchase electricity for 15 years starting in 2016 when the facility is scheduled for commercial operational.

The plant will have a total capacity of 16MW – equivalent to powering around 21,000 homes – and will be constructed by French-owned utility firm SITA UK in Cornwall. It is expected to help cut 85,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and prevent 240,000 tonnes of waste from going to landfill every year.

David Park, Director of UK Retail at GDF SUEZ Energy UK said: “This new agreement with SITA UK, part of the GDF SUEZ Group, demonstrates the strength of GDF SUEZ in the UK and the ability this gives us to bring renewable energy to our customers.”
