Amec, Exelon team up on nuclear

A partnership has been announced between Amec and Exelon Nuclear Partners (ENP) to provide consultancy and support services to nuclear power projects around the world.

International engineering and project management company Amec said that it was collaborating with ENP – a division of the USA’s largest nuclear generator Exelon – to “explore opportunities in new markets across the international energy sector.” The partnership, focusing on “nuclear new build and existing reactor marketplaces,” will provide engineering, consultancy, project management and operations support services.

Amec entered into a definitive agreement with Foster Wheeler last month under which Amec will make an offer to acquire the Swiss-based engineering, construction and equipment supplier. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2014.

Foster Wheeler’s power division offers a range of steam generator equipment, condensers and feedwater heaters for nuclear power plants. It also supplies aftermarket products and services for fossil fuel and renewable energy facilities.

Amec’s nuclear division offers a range of nuclear services from site management through to waste management and decommissioning. ENP provides nuclear power operating, performance improvement and new nuclear development services.

Clive White, president for Amec’s European clean energy business, said: “This new partnership will combine Amec’s wide ranging nuclear skills, such as licensing, engineering consultancy and permitting expertise, with Exelon’s unrivalled operational experience.” He added, “It supports our strategy to grow our nuclear capability and will create a formidable entity to target major projects in new and exciting markets such as the Middle East and mainland Europe.”

ENP CEO Amir Shahkarami added, “The global opportunities across the sector, from new build through to decommissioning and waste management, are huge.”
